How the time duration calculator works
Each interval is its end minus its start. If an end is earlier than its start, you're asked whether it runs past midnight — nothing is assumed.
Breaks are taken off the total. Decimal hours are rounded to two places, the way most timesheets want them.
Examples
- 09:00–12:30 and 13:30–17:00 is 7 hours (7.00 decimal).
- 22:00–06:00 overnight is 8 hours.
- 09:00–17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours.
Good for
- Filling in a timesheet
- Checking a shift length
- Adding up time spent on a task across the day
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate an overnight shift?
- Enter the end time as it reads on the clock (06:00). The calculator notices it's earlier than the start and offers to count it as overnight.
- What are decimal hours?
- Hours as a decimal number: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5. Payroll and invoicing often use them.
